Purge your excess belongings
So you have a lot of stuff, but who doesn't ? There are 300,000 items in the average American home (Becoming Minimalist), and that’s a lot of stuff, especially when it comes to moving day. The easiest way to save money on your move is to simply get rid of that unnecessary stuff in your home! Yes, we know you worked hard for all that stuff, but do you really need to hold onto that “vintage” chair that you’ve been planning on refurbishing since 2012? No! You don’t need that chair! Now is the time to purge your home of all the stuff you don’t need. Put together a list of the items you want to keep, donate, or sell. If you start this purging process today you will save a lot of money on your upcoming move. Most moving companies charge you by the amount of stuff you have that needs to be moved. The more stuff you have, the higher your moving bill is going to be, so start the purging process today!
2. Rent your own moving truck
Save that money 🍯 and rent your own moving truck from Uhaul, Budget, Penske, or Fluid Truck Share (We highly recommend Fluid because of their simple rental process, customer service, and affordable rates). Renting your own moving truck may sound a little intimidating, but 48% of Americans rent a moving truck to save money on their move (Move Buddha). If you plan on renting your own truck, we highly recommend making your truck reservation 2-3 weeks prior to your moving day. Here’s a graphic below that will come in handy when picking your truck. Tip: Don’t forget to rent moving pads/blankets for your furniture. Moving pads help protective your furniture when you accidentally hit that curb that randomly popped up in the road ;).
3. Don’t be a lazy lucy, obtain quotes from MUltiple Movers
Before hiring a moving company, shop around town for multiple moving estimates. We recommend obtaining quotes from 3 local moving companies. How are you going to find your local moving company? It’s simple: open google maps, keyword search “moving company”, and all the local moving companies in your area will populate on the map. Choose 3 local companies, call them, and provide them with an accurate inventory of everything that you need moved. After you discuss your move in details ask the companies to send you a hard copy of the estimate to your personal email. Take some time to review the estimates, and then pick your company! Note: Not all moving companies are equal! Make sure you take some time to research the all the companies online, read their reviews, and make sure they are licensed and insured. After you do your research you can choose your company. If you don’t have the time to call multiple companies we recommend posting your job on Yelp. Yelp does a great job at sending estimates from many local companies directly to your phone.
